Reborn Dolls
Reborn Dolls are manufactured vinyl play dolls that have been altered to look like a real human baby. The process is called reborning and this style of altering the dolls started around the 1990’s. Since then the industry of Reborn Dolls have emerged and supported the artisans needs in this endeavor.
Reborning involves a number of time consuming steps. They involve getting a vinyl doll blank, (un-used doll parts) and adding multiple layers of heat set paints. These layers usually start with veining and ends with a clear to simulate wet spots like eyes, mouth edges, and such. Each layer is heat set in what I joking call baking the baby and yes I get many a strange look.
Then on to the eye color, hair color and style, this can be either a wig, painted on, or needle felted individual strands in place. Needle felting is the most time consuming although individual rooting of the hair can be a very Beautiful effect. Then there are eyelashes and assembling the actual doll.
Depending on the craftsman weighting the baby for a very realistic feel and weight is possible along with other features such as armature and bell plates.
The news every so often talks of police action to save a reborn doll left in a car seat unattended. Knowing the time and energy in creating one of these masterpieces, we should thank the men in blue for their efforts in preserving our dolls.
